How to water your plants, especially indoor garden?

When talking about growing, people will be annoyed by how to water. Knowing when and how to water plants is one of the most impactful and easiest ways to ensure your plants thrive in your home.

How often should plants be watered? How much should I water plants? When to water? Many questions…

Water Essentials

Here are some golden rules for watering your plants. Keep these on hand when watering:

Always water after repotting.

Plants in large pots dry out more slowly than plants in smaller pots.

Plants in bright daylight dry out more quickly than plants in low light.

Humid air keeps soil moist for longer than dry air.

Roots need water, not leaves.

Ideal growing temperature is 18-26℃, and humidity is 50-60%.

Today we will introduce how to water under our hydroponic system for example.

For our grow box, it is with visible water level window. So you can clearly see the water situation.

Watering:

Initially water

Initially water to the MIN water level when seedling.

Water after seedling 10-15 days

After seedling, the first time to water is in 10-15 days if the sponge is not dry out or houseplants not withered. The bottom of the sponge cannot touch the water, in this situation, you also need watering.

Plants situation:

If the plants grow very well, you can add water to MAX in 10-15 days after seedling, such as basil, tomato, lettuce. Following is two pictures for your reference. These plants are growing very well.

11 days after seedling:

If the plants grow slowly and not so good. The suggested first time to add water level to MIN level, such as thyme, oregano, rosemary, parsley, dill, mint.

Water after seedling 15-25 days

For lettuce, basil, tomato and other plants that grow faster and have larger leaves and crowns, you usually need to add water once about 7 days. The time for adding water to leafy vegetables should be shortened, usually 3-5 days more, leafy vegetables are generally close to the harvest state. (The amount of watering depends on the specific situation, the size of the plant, the environmental temperature and humidity.)

 Water after seedling 25 days

The larger the growing plants, the more water is needed. In the case of higher environment temperature (planting temperature greater than 22℃), you can usually water to MAX every 3-7 days (subject to the actual water level, add water if the water level is lower than the MIN level)

For plants with smaller leaves and slowly growth period, such as thyme, oregano, rosemary, water once every 10-15 days.

Plants, with slower growth in the early stage and faster growth in the later stage, are watered according to the actual demand of the plant, usually every 7-10 days, such as coriander, dill, parsley and other plants (According to the actual water level, add water if below the MIN water level)

Temperature: Keep it Tepid

Most houseplants prefer warm or tepid water over cold water. Warm water absorbs into soil best. Try not to splash water onto your plant’s leaves (unless it’s an orchid, air plant, or a fern, that will appreciate the added humidity). Most tropical plants have waxy leaves because the rainfall in their natural environment (i.e., the rainforest) can be excessive. Waxy leaves helps water slide off and avoids risk of fungal infections.
